Google has started rolling out a design update for its popular productivity apps. Today, the company announced that Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Sites are getting the new Material Design look. This comes after Google Drive received the same update last year.
If you use these apps, you will notice some changes. The interface fonts look different. The controls are slightly updated. There are also new icons and some fresh colors here and there. However, there is one important thing to know: this is only a design refresh. There are no new features. Everything is still in the same place as before. You do not need to learn anything new.
The rollout starts today for G Suite subscribers who are on the Rapid Release schedule. These users should see the new design within the next 15 days. For those whose admins are on the Scheduled Release schedule, the update will come around February 11. Free users will likely see the new look within the next month as well, although Google has not given a specific date.
Over the last few months, Google has been updating most of its web and mobile apps with this new design. Google Calendar was one of the latest apps to get the refresh. Now that Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Sites are getting the update, Google has mostly completed this project. Of course, they may release new Material Design guidelines in the future, but for now, the work is almost done.
So, if you open Google Docs today and see a slightly different look, do not worry. Your documents are all safe. It is just a fresh new design to make things look more modern.
