Three Indian policemen were killed and two others injured in a fierce gunbattle with Naxals in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Saturday, according to local police officials.
The gunfight erupted when a group of Naxal militants ambushed a contingent of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) in the Jagargunda area, located approximately 515 km south of the state capital Raipur. The confrontation took place in the dense forests of Jagargunda.
A police spokesperson confirmed that three officers lost their lives in the attack, while two others were critically wounded and swiftly evacuated to a nearby hospital. Following the ambush, additional police and paramilitary forces were deployed to the area to search for the attackers.
This incident marks the latest in a series of Naxal-related violence in Chhattisgarh. Just days earlier, two policemen were killed in a similar attack in the Rajnandgaon district.
Naxal insurgents, active across central and eastern India, have long posed a significant security challenge. The movement, which has led to widespread violence and displacement, was once described by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as India’s “greatest internal security challenge.”
