Bangladesh’s 12th National Parliamentary Elections Sees 40% Voter Turnout

Voter turnout in 12th national parliamentary elections of Bangladesh, held on Sunday, reached approximately 40 percent of eligible voters, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal reported.

During a press conference, Awal indicated that the final turnout may be higher once all votes are counted. He also noted that the elections were conducted in a generally peaceful and democratic environment, with only a few minor irregularities and incidents of violence.

The official results are expected to be announced by midnight.

With around 120 million eligible voters and over 42,000 polling stations across the country, approximately 2,000 candidates are competing for 299 of the 300 directly elected parliamentary seats. Voting in one constituency was postponed following the death of a candidate.

A party needs at least 151 seats to form the government. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, which has held power since 2009, is aiming for a fourth consecutive five-year term.
