Nigeria and India Strengthen Ties with Focus on Defense and Maritime Security

Nigeria and India have agreed to build a robust strategic partnership, focusing on enhancing cooperation in economic development, defense, healthcare, and food security.

The agreement came during a two-day state visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nigeria, where he met with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Sunday.

The leaders pledged to strengthen collaboration in counterterrorism, maritime security, and intelligence sharing, with a particular emphasis on safeguarding vital maritime trade routes amid rising threats in the Gulf of Guinea and the Indian Ocean. Both countries agreed to continue joint naval exercises and anti-piracy operations in the region.

A joint statement released at the conclusion of Modi’s visit condemned terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorist movements, financing networks, and safe havens. The statement called for the expeditious adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations and stressed the need for full implementation of UN resolutions on counterterrorism.

Modi also expressed India’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s defense modernization efforts. His visit, which marks the first by an Indian leader to Nigeria in 17 years, underscores the growing importance of bilateral ties between the two nations.
