New Survey Ship Commissioned into Indian Navy

The Indian Navy formally inducted INS Nirdeshak, the second ship of the Survey Vessel (Large) project, in a ceremony held today at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. This ship, constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, is part of a series of four vessels designed to enhance India’s maritime capabilities.

Speaking at the event, Defense Minister Sanjay Seth highlighted the crucial role of survey vessels in improving oceanic data accuracy and maritime safety. “These highly specialized ships allow for precise data collection and processing, enabling the creation of reliable maritime charts that are essential for safe navigation and operations,” he said.

INS Nirdeshak, measuring 110 meters in length and displacing around 3,800 tons, is equipped with advanced hydrographic and oceanographic survey tools, including multi-beam echo sounders, side scan sonars, and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The ship’s indigenous construction, with over 80% local content, enhances India’s self-reliance in defense technology.

The vessel’s capabilities will significantly improve navigation and deep-sea survey operations, especially in hazardous and restricted zones. It will also aid in environmental research, wreck identification, and provide vital support for maritime safety.

INS Nirdeshak is expected to play a key role in enhancing India’s maritime security, supporting regional collaboration, and advancing scientific research in the Indian Ocean Region.
