At least 59 people have been killed in devastating floods that have ravaged Bangladesh over the past few weeks, according to the National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC).
The floods, which primarily affected the southeastern regions of Noakhali, Cumilla, and Feni, have inundated large swaths of land, displacing millions. The NDRCC’s latest update confirms the deaths of 41 men, six women, and 12 children as of Saturday. The floodwaters have also caused widespread damage to property and crops, affecting over 5 million people across 11 of Bangladesh’s 64 districts.
While the flood situation has begun to improve in several southeastern districts, with waters starting to recede, approximately 700,000 people remain stranded. The northeastern Sylhet region is also facing a rapidly deteriorating situation as rising rivers continue to flood vast areas.
In response to the crisis, interim government Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has called for continued efforts to rescue stranded individuals, provide emergency healthcare, and offer aid to victims. Disaster response teams have been deployed to assist with rescue operations and distribute relief supplies to shelters.
The ongoing disaster underscores the urgent need for coordinated relief efforts as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the flooding.
