
At least seven people were killed and several others injured in a blast at a coal mine in the Birbhum district of West Bengal on Monday, according to police reports.
The explosion occurred at the Gangaramchak Mining Private Limited colliery in the Bhadulia block, located about 217 km northwest of Kolkata, the state capital. Police officials stated that the blast happened when a truck carrying a detonator arrived at the site for unloading, and the device exploded unexpectedly.
“Initially, five people were confirmed dead at the scene, and two more deaths were reported later, bringing the total death toll to seven,” a police spokesperson said. “The injured individuals were quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.”
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols at mining operations in the region, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the blast.
